Telford security staff mighty hike for charity

Two members of the Interserve security team at Telford Shopping Centre are putting their best foot forward to take part in the Chilterns Mighty Hike – a 26 mile ‘hiking marathon’ from Henley-on-Thames to Oxford in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

John Rowlinson, aged 37 and John Winwood, aged 34 are both from Telford and are employed by the international support services and construction company, Interserve. They will be stepping out on Saturday 25 July to raise funds for Macmillan Cancer Support – a national charity of which John Rowlinson has had personal experience.

Diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer in 2010, John underwent three operations to remove two tumours and his thyroid gland. At the time, he received very valuable support from Macmillan nurses and John is now looking to help make a difference to the lives of others through his fundraising efforts.

“Having seen for myself the wonderful job Macmillan nurses do and the care and support they provide for families, I am very proud to play an active role in one of the charity’s major fundraising events,” John explained.

“The Chilterns Mighty Hike is going to be a considerable challenge; however John Winwood and I have been in training for over a year. We have even been attending Slimming World to get ourselves in the best possible shape for the walk – losing a total of 11 stone between us!

“Our colleagues, friends and family have all been incredibly generous with their donations and we are now looking forward to getting our walking boots on and doing our bit for this very worthy cause.”

The challenging hiking marathon will see the duo walk 26 miles from Henley-on-Thames to Oxford, journeying along Shakespeare’s Way – a route taken by The Bard on his many trips between Stratford and London. The charity’s minimum sponsorship requirement of £250 has already been exceed by the pair and they are now well on their way to achieving their own personal sponsorship targets.

Telford Shopping Centre’s Centre Director, Chris Jones, said: “John Rowlinson and John Winwood’s joint weight loss is an inspiration to all and walking 26 miles is certainly no mean feat, but they have both approached their training with a huge amount of commitment and energy and their passion is clear to see. The Centre Management team and everybody at Interserve are fully supportive of their endeavours and we all wish them every success in the marathon hike.”
