The Autism friendly Shopping Experience

Our aim at Telford Centre is to ensure that our customers feel valued and cared for so they can enjoy their visit with us while they shop, dine, meet with friends and family.

However, we understand that for the estimated 1760 people living with autism in Telford and Wrekin a trip to a vibrant and popular place such as Telford Centre can be a difficult experience.

That's why we have teamed up with Telford Autism Hub to help deliver an autism friendly experience which feels welcoming and safe for our customers.

We have five team members who are Autism Champions and have been trained to support customers affected by autism and raise awareness with our shoppers and retailers.

Our Autism Champions can be identified by their Autism Champions badges. Should you wish to speak with one of our Champions during your visit then please visit our Customer Service Desk.

We also provide an Autism Quiet Hour on the first Saturday of every month between 9am and 10am.

During this hour our retailers will take simple steps for 60 minutes that  help provide a more autism-friendly world experience for our visitors.

What are we going to do?

  • Turning down music and other noise in the mall environment: Overwhelming noise is a common barrier to people affected by autism accessing shops. Where possible, in-store tannoy announcements and other controllable noise will be reduced. Participating retailers will also reduce music/ noise levels for this hour.
  • Dimming the lights where possible on the mall: Lighting, particularly fluorescent strip lighting, can be overwhelming for those affected by autism. Wherever possible, whilst maintaining a safe premises, we will reduce light levels.
  • We as a Centre will be turning off mall music, only making tannoy messages if there’s an emergency, and turning off the frog clock for the quiet hour.

Additionally we recently opened The Retreat roof top garden, in partnership with Telford Autism Hub. This provides a relaxed space for all to enjoy, at any time of day. For further details click here
